he Minister of Youth Development, Boni Haruna yesterday joined all well meaning and peace loving citizens of Nigeria to condemn in all its ramifications the recent reported incident of the burning of two buses with President Goodluck Jonathan’s picture by irate youths in Jos, Plateau State.
The Minister expressed sadness by the untoward development which has the potential to escalate current security challenges facing the country and our collective resolve for transparent and peaceful elections in February.
The Minister stated that this singular act of violence and the follow up violent riots by other youths is anti-theatrical to on-going efforts by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Youth Development to re-orientate the youth against anti-democratic and violent conducts before, during and after the upcoming general elections in February.
He noted that the on-going capacity building workshop for effective youth participation in the 2015 general elections in Nigeria being organized by the Ministry of Youth Development is strongly supported by our development partners.
It is an intervention programme meant to proactively build the capacity of youth to identify the potential risks and danger inherent in partaking in violence as a means of settling political scores at all levels.
The Minister advised the youth to position themselves as veritable instruments for building a virile democratic culture which can only be the pedestal for achieving true socio-political development.
Underscoring the role of the over 60 million youth in this nation’s quest for a violent free election, the Minister implored the youth to act as the fundamental building blocks for the realization of the aspiration of a New Nigeria; a new threshold that can bequeath lasting legacy to the current and future generations of Nigerians.
