The Nigeria Democratic Congress will inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council on October 20 as the party steps up preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The National Chairman of the NDC, Senator Moses Cleopas, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday.
Cleopas said the party’s National Working Committee had developed the structure of the campaign council and submitted it to the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, for consultation.
He said the consultations were intended to ensure that appointments reflected the experience, contributions and expectations of the two candidates.
Positions under consideration include director-general, deputy director-general, finance director, director of mobilisation and spokesperson.
According to the chairman, the party is taking its time to make the appointments to prevent disagreements that could affect its campaign.
He said the NDC had continued preparations for the elections despite concerns over the timing of the council’s inauguration.
Cleopas added that Obi and Kwankwaso had been engaging Nigerians through consultations and town hall meetings in different parts of the country.
He cited engagements in Rivers, Sokoto and Kaduna states, saying another town hall meeting was scheduled for Enugu on October 15.
The party chairman also disclosed that the NDC had begun preparations to deploy polling agents across the country, with its state structures already activated.
He said the party was working with its senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship and state assembly candidates to identify and prepare agents for their respective constituencies.
Cleopas said the move was aimed at addressing challenges associated with election-day representation and strengthening the party’s capacity to protect votes.
He urged voters to remain vigilant after casting their ballots and ensure that their votes were properly recorded and counted.
The chairman also cautioned support groups against interfering in the party’s administration, stressing that the responsibility rested with constitutionally recognised party structures.
He acknowledged the importance of groups such as the Obidient Movement and the OK Movement to electoral mobilisation but said they should operate within their assigned roles.
“We are not against the Obidient Movement. We recognise its relevance, we need it, we value it and we regard its members as our friends,” Cleopas said.
He, however, stressed that support groups had no authority to manage the party or independently perform the functions of its Presidential Campaign Council.
The NDC said its preparations for the 2027 elections would continue through consultations, campaign planning and the mobilisation of polling agents.
