From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

Communication specialist of Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), a sub-scheme of the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE P), revealed that more Nigerians are now living above poverty line with the introduction of the SURE P in 2012.

Mr. Haruna stated this yesterday during a presentation at a programme titled ‘NEPC-GIS Stakeholders Forum’, organised by the GIS, in partnership with Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano State.

According to Haruna, the programme was designed to offer temporary employment for 50,000 unemployed graduates in the 36 states in the country every year, arguing, that each of the graduates will beearning the sum of N30, 000 monthly stipend, equivalent to $2USD.

” The greatest benefit of GIS is that the beneficiaries will be earning N30,000 monthly for the period of a year, this mean they will be earning equivalent to $2USD. That means 50,000 graduates would be living above poverty line. With this amount, the beneficiary would help his family and could even save some amount out of the money. More importantly, the beneficiary could be self employed from the skill acquired while training,” he said.

The communication specialist also assured that the programme would help in reducing social dislocation in the country, stressing that it would promote stability in the nation.

Earlier in a speech, the project director of GIS, Mr. Peter Papka, stated that the scheme’s partnership with Nigeria export Promotion Council, would aid in observing the need to engage more young graduates into the export trade, which is a growing sector that can contribute substantially to economic growth and employment.

Mr. Papka assured that “by our calculation, this partnership will produce thousands of exporters every year.”

He added that “In order to deepen the partnership, a Youth Empowerment Export Skills Acquisition Programme (YEESAP) has been initiated by NEPC, with plots to be run first in Lagos and Kano,” he stated.
