The African Democratic Congress on Tuesday clarified its membership registration process amid reports circulating in the public domain.
In a statement issued by the Office of the National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, the party said its procedures were clearly defined and rooted in its constitution.
The ADC said it was founded on principles of order, discipline and strict adherence to laid-down rules.
Gombe distanced the party’s national leadership from reports claiming that an individual identified as Peter Obi was registered at the party’s zonal office in Enugu.
He said such a process was not recognised under the party’s constitution.
“It has come to our attention that reports alleged registration at a zonal office in Enugu,” Gombe said.
“The National Working Committee wishes to state categorically that this does not align with the constitutional and stipulated procedures for membership registration into the African Democratic Congress.”
According to him, the ADC constitution recognises ward-level registration as the only valid entry point for prospective members.
He explained that registration must be carried out at the ward of residence or origin, with completion of official forms and issuance of a validated membership card.
“The party’s constitution does not provide for registration at zonal or national offices outside designated wards,” he said.
“Any registration carried out contrary to this provision is considered irregular and invalid.”
Gombe said the party was open to all Nigerians but insisted that inclusiveness must operate strictly within its laws and regulations.
He added that the party was investigating what it described as a breach of due process linked to the reported registration.
The ADC urged members of the public to disregard claims suggesting alternative registration channels.
“The ADC remains committed to providing a credible platform for all Nigerians within the ambit of its constitution,” Gombe said.
