The recognised leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State has dismissed a purported state congress organised by Mr. Patrick Ambut, describing it as invalid and lacking legal standing.
In a statement issued on May 7, 2026, the chapter led by Hon. Ahmed Tijjani Ahmed said the event organised by a self-acclaimed group of “ADC members and stakeholders” was an attempt to mislead the public and create confusion within the party.
According to the statement, Ambut was expelled in 2022 over alleged anti-party activities and misconduct. The party said he was granted clemency in 2025 to support inclusivity during the formation of the ADC coalition, but was again expelled on April 14, 2026, by the appropriate party authorities for similar violations.
Citing Article 9.4 of the ADC Constitution, the chapter stated that an expelled member forfeits all rights and privileges within the party and cannot hold any office unless the National Executive Committee officially reverses the decision.
“As of today, no such reversal has occurred. You cannot build legitimacy on a void,” the statement said.
The group further argued that Ambut and his associates lack the constitutional authority to appoint officers or conduct a state congress, describing the move as impersonation and factionalism.
According to the statement, such actions violate Article 9.6 of the party’s constitution, which classifies factionalism as an anti-party activity punishable by expulsion.
The chapter also referenced provisions of the 1999 Constitution, noting that while Section 40 guarantees freedom of association, Section 223(1) requires internal democracy within political parties, while Section 222(e) mandates regular elections rather than the imposition of officials by dissident groups.
Relying on judicial precedents, including INEC v. Musa (2003) and PDP v. Sylva (2012), the chapter maintained that only leadership recognised by a party’s highest organ can legitimately act on its behalf.
It further stated that the Ahmed Tijjani Ahmed-led State Executive Committee has remained the only recognised leadership structure of the party in Kaduna State since 2022, adding that Ahmed served as the recognised state chairman during the 2023 general elections.
“For now, ADC state chairmen will remain in office until their tenure expires on May 14, 2026,” the statement added.
The Kaduna State executive also reaffirmed its loyalty to the national leadership of the ADC under Senator David Mark and pledged continued commitment to discipline, internal democracy, and the rule of law.
