The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Legislatures Forum has cautioned the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu against taking the party’s approach for granted, insisting that its restraint should not be mistaken for weakness.
The warning was issued on Tuesday during a press conference in Abuja, where a former member of the House of Representatives, Chile Igbawua, said the party was merely demanding that institutions carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
According to him, the ADC is not seeking favours but expects both the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act within their mandates.
He expressed concern over what he described as a lack of confidence in INEC’s current composition, alleging that the electoral body has not demonstrated the neutrality expected of it.
Igbawua also criticised the leadership of the National Assembly, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of weakening the legislature.
He further alleged that the leadership of the legislative arm has assumed roles outside its constitutional duties, including defending officials of the electoral commission.
“We are ashamed of what we see in the National Assembly today,” he said, adding that those undermining democratic institutions would ultimately be held accountable.
The forum maintained that while the ADC has remained measured in its opposition role, it would continue to demand accountability from all arms of government as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
