A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s led federal government to suspend ongoing political campaigns and channel its attention toward addressing the country’s worsening security challenges.
Amaechi made the appeal while commenting on the state of the nation, warning that the current wave of insecurity across parts of the country undermines the foundation for credible elections.
According to him, electoral activities should not take precedence over the safety of citizens, stressing that no meaningful democratic process can thrive in an atmosphere of fear and instability.
“There can be no meaningful elections if citizens do not feel safe in their own communities,” he stated.
The former minister cautioned that continued electioneering in the face of killings, kidnappings and general unrest could further erode public confidence in government.
He therefore urged authorities to treat the security situation as a national emergency, insisting that restoring law and order must come before full-scale political engagements ahead of future elections.a
