Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 1, Tambari Yabo Muhammad has warned politicians to desist from inciting violence during the forthcoming elections or risk jail term.
Speaking at a meeting with political party leaders of the northwest zone, comprising Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states at his office yesterday, Muhammad called on the politicians to be prepared to enter the elections with clean mind in order to have violence-free elections.
According to him, section 94 (1) of the electoral act prohibits the use of weapons during political rally, procession or at voting centres, adding that whoever found wanting shall be fined N2,000,000 or face two years jail term or both.
He however cautioned the politicians and all stakeholders to avoid using abusive language directly or indirectly, stressing that places of worship, Police stations and public offices should not be used for political activities during political rallies and campaigns.
” I warn you to enter the election with clean mind and boldness to make the forthcoming election a violence-free. I also warn you that electoral acts state stern punishment mated on any person who is found with weapons or other means to incite violence.” He said
Mr. Muhammad also appealed to politicians to embrace all avenues capable of making the next month’s elections credible, free, and fair and worth commending in the committee of nations.
He however warned that the Police and other law enforcement agencies will bring in to bear the full weight of the law on all violators of electoral and other national laws.
