The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI)has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for withdrawing recognition of the African Democratic Congress leadership led by David Mark.

The group also praised the commission for removing the party’s National Working Committee from its official portal, describing the move as a boost to transparency and accountability.

In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, on Thursday, the group said the action reflects INEC’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Bamidele noted that by taking the step, the commission had demonstrated its resolve to uphold democratic principles and ensure that political parties operate within established legal frameworks.

He said the decision was timely as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for strict adherence to democratic norms.

“The withdrawal of recognition of the David Mark-led faction signifies more than a bureaucratic action; it reaffirms the importance of legitimacy within political parties,” he said.

According to him, political parties must reflect the will of their members and operate in line with their constitutions.

“By removing the names of the National Working Committee from its portal, INEC has sent a clear message that leadership must be earned through democratic processes rather than assumed through questionable means,” he added.

Bamidele further stated that INEC’s reaffirmation of neutrality was critical in the current political climate, urging political actors to respect the independence of the electoral body.

He warned that any action capable of undermining the electoral process should be avoided, noting that democracy thrives on fairness and adherence to laid-down rules.

The group also called on the ADC leadership and other political parties to resolve internal disputes through dialogue, warning that unresolved crises could affect the credibility of the electoral process.

“The health of our democracy depends on the ability of political parties to resolve their differences without undermining the system,” he said.

Bamidele urged civil society organisations, the media, and the public to remain vigilant and actively engaged ahead of the 2027 polls.

He added that the organisation remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote civic education, voter awareness, and peaceful participation in elections.

The group maintained that INEC’s actions would help strengthen public confidence in the electoral system and foster a transparent and credible democratic process.
