From Lawal Sa’idu Funtua, Katsina

A group called the Coalition for Credible Leadership in Katsina State has organised a round table discussion with Non-governmental Organizations aimed at charting the way forward for a credible leadership in the state.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, the chairman of the group and immediate past Chief Judge of the state, Justice Sadiq Abdullahi Mahuta lamented that lack of credible leadership which he said entrenched corruption in the land.

He said “we are therefore with a class of politicians whose only interest is to retain political power to perpetuate corrupt practices that leave our people among the poorest in the country”.

Mahuta argued that loyalty rather than competence was now the criteria used for recruitment into prominent positions within the political parties as well as elective offices.

According to him, “the result is that incompetence becomes the hallmark of politics and quite naturally the anointed are appointed and rigged into offices not because of their competence but because of their loyalty”

He noted that apart from threat to democracy this culture of impunity according to him, posed a serious threat to security and good governance of the country, stating that this tragedy must be averted through collaboration between the political class and civil society groups.

Mahuta stated that their coalition for credible leadership in Katsina is to promote the emergence of credible leaders in the state devoid of sentimental affiliations, promising that the group would engage all stakeholders in the process.

Earlier in a remark, a coordinator of the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Maude urged civil society groups and other stakeholders in the state to take the issue of entrenching credible leadership in the state seriously.
