Kabiru-Ibrahim-GayaFrom Edwin Olofu, Kano

Former governor of Kano state and Senator representing Kano-South, Arch. Kabiru Gaya said he escaped death by whiskers when four men, clad in military uniforms, wielding AK 47 riffles waylaid his convoy along Jaji -Zaria federal highway Friday last week.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the armed robbers to Peoples Daily yesterday in Kano, Gaya said the robbers flagged his car down at about 7:30pm, flashing their torch lights and his driver thought they were military personnel and therefore stopped.

He added that, on discovering that they were men of the underworld, Gaya, who was disguised in smaller car that was driving in front of the Toyota Prado SUV, asked his driver to zoom off, saying that was how he escaped the robbers whose attention was on his SUV behind him.

Gaya added that the robbers immediately asked the occupants of the SUV to vacate, which they obliged, while the robbers drove away with the vehicle to an unknown destination.

“We thank Almighty Allah for saving our lives; but I must confess the situation is really disturbing and I’m worried that people well-kitted in military uniform with AK-47 will carry out this act; that goes to tell you that we are in a problem in this country, because of the proliferation of arms and how military uniform now is common in the market”, he stated.
