Imams, Islamic scholars call for soft approach in tackling insurgence

Imams and Islamic Scholars have called for the use of soft approach in tackling the lingering insecurity challenges facing the country, especially the northern part.

A soft approach they said could fast-track restoration of peace and security in Northern Nigeria, such as interfaith dialogue, continuous preaching for peace, mobilization of organizations and individuals to extend support and care to the poor

The Imams and Islamic scholars’ stated this in a communiqué issued at the end of a capacity building workshop on the promotion of peace and security, especially in Northern Nigeria organized by the Muslim Community Centre (MCC) Abuja.

They noted that most of the young men and women involved in violence were either those who did not have proper parental care on drug abuse or at one time or the other were invoked in political thuggery.

They also stressed the need for Islamic centers to serve as regulatory bodies on Islamic preaching instead of government agencies, while urging Islamic Scholars to have purity of mind and the fear of Allah in the discharge of their religious duties of preaching and public education.

This is even as they identified wide range of causes of violence in Northern Nigeria including sentiments, selfish interest, economic challenges, poor/lack of parental care and socio-political related issues.
