Kano threatens private schools to slash school fees or cancel 3rd term

Date:

From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

The Kano state Ministry of Education has warned private school proprietors to slash 25 to 30 percent or the ministry is left with no option than to terminate the 3rd term of the 2019/2020 academic calendar.
The Kano State Commissioner of Education, Muhammad Sanusi Kiru, gave the warning in a statement yesterday by Aliyu Yusuf, Chief Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Education of the state.
He said the commissioner explained that the decision of the ministry became necessary in consideration of the hard economic condition experienced as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.
He quoted the commissioner as disclosing that he setup two parallel ad-hoc committees to discuss with owners of private schools on the percentage of school fees they are to reduce, giving reference to about 4 – 5 states.
He added that failure to heed to the call would force the commission to cancel the 3rd term totally, so that the academic calendar would commence with a new session in January, 2021.
“Proprietors of Private Schools should so some sign of appreciation for the support they enjoyed from the State Government and extend the same magnanimity to the good people of Kano State,” Kiru was quoted as saying in the statement.
He said the commissioner assured the good people of the State that if by 1st November, 2020 there is no positive response, the Ministry would be left with no option than to take such a revolutionary decision in public interest.
