Leaders of the Eggon Cultural Development Association (ECDA), including former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Solomon Akku Ewuga, have called on Governor Abdullahi Sule to address the predicament of the 30 women arrested in the state for alleged acts of violence and destruction of public facilities.
Senator Ewuga made the appeal during a visit to Governor Sule at the Government House, Lafia, where he led a delegation to congratulate the governor on the recent Supreme Court judgement that upheld his victory in the gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023.
The delegation comprised key stakeholders and former lawmaker Mrs Mary Enwongulu, who is a member of the Governing Council of Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
It would be recalled that the arrest of the 38 protesters occurred following a violent demonstration in response to the Supreme Court’s verdict on January 19 in Lafia.
Thirty women and eight others were subsequently remanded at the Correctional Centre, Lafia, by a Chief Magistrate Court after being arraigned for alleged offenses related to the protest.
During the visit, Senator Ewuga and the delegation sought the governor’s intervention to address the plight of the arrested women, emphasizing the importance of a fair and just resolution to the situation.
The leaders further assured Governor Sule of their unwavering support and commitment to exceeding all expectations.
The call for intervention comes amidst concerns over the well-being and rights of the arrested women, with the leaders urging a thorough and transparent examination of the circumstances surrounding their arrest and subsequent remand.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, in response to the appeal, acknowledged the concerns raised by the leaders and assured them of a thorough review of the situation.
He expressed his commitment to justice and pledged to work towards a fair resolution in line with the rule of law.
