The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has pledged to sponsor the education of four children of the two personnel killed in the line of duty on Sunday in Tureta local government area of Sokoto state.
The pledge was made by the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), Administration and Finance, Mr Suleiman Muhammad Abdul.
He said that under a new welfare scheme introduced by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Tunde Disu to encourage officers and men of the force, the four children would be sponsored up to secondary school level.
Our Correspondent in Sokoto reports that Abdul who is also the DIG coordinating North-West spoke on Monday in Sokoto at a parley with critical stakeholders as part of his two-day operational visit to the Sokoto State Police Command.
DIG Suleiman Muhammad Abdul further said that the IGP had also taken bold steps to enhance the timely payment of gratuities and pension, as well as all entitlements of deceased police force officers to their families.
He added that the current police management under IGP Disu was fully committed to bolstering the general welfare, training, retraining and equipping of police officers and formations across the country.
He stressed that providing security of of lives and property of all law-abiding citizens of Nigeria was a collective responsibility.
DIG Suleiman Muhammad Abdul further charged offers and men of the force across the country to be more disciplined, professional and patriotic.
“We must all do our job with the absolute fear of God and nobody should be harassed or molested by any police officer” he urged.
The DIG maintained that the ultimate weapon against insecurity is a united and vigilant community.
He underscored the importance of Sokoto State in the security architecture of Nigeria, acknowledging the sustained support of the state government, Sultanate Council of Sokoto and the generality of the people of the state.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, Sokoto State Command, said that the DIG’s visit formed a a significant milestone towards enhancing police operations.
Shaffa appreciated the unwavering commitment of the IGP towards the modernization and professionalisation of the Nigeria Police Force.
Accrington to him, Sokoto State remains a critical trade corridor in Nigeria, sharing local and international borders, thereby vulnerable to some security challenges.
He also stated that Sokoto State is a spiritual hub in Nigeria, being the home of the Sultan of Sokoto, the head of the Nigerian Muslim Ummah.
Shaffa applauded Sokoto state government for its sustained provision of operational vehicles and financial support to the command.
