A major milestone in Nigeria’s youth engagement and national unity efforts is set to unfold on Saturday, December 13, as the National Youths Alliance (NYA) prepares to sign the groundbreaking North–South Youth Alliance Accord (NSYAA) at the iconic Arewa House in Kaduna.

The Accord, described by organizers as a historic youth-driven initiative, aims to bridge long-standing regional divides and promote stronger cooperation between young people from Northern and Southern Nigeria. It represents one of the most structured attempts in recent years to foster inter-regional trust, interfaith harmony, and national cohesion.

According to the NYA, the NSYAA will introduce several key mechanisms to deepen collaboration across regional lines, including a Joint Declaration on peace and mutual respect, a 12-member Coordinating Committee with equal representation from both regions, an Annual North–South Youth Unity Conference, and a series of interfaith and intercultural exchange programs. The Accord also outlines coordinated advocacy against hate speech, extremism, misinformation, and regional stereotypes—issues that have long strained relationships among Nigerian youths.

Speaking ahead of the event, NYA Vice President (North), Abubakar Muhammad General, emphasized the symbolic and practical significance of the Accord.

“Nigeria’s unity is not an abstract ideal—it is a responsibility that rests heavily on the shoulders of our generation,” he said. “The North–South Youth Alliance Accord sends a clear message that Nigerian youths reject division and choose dialogue, cooperation, and shared national destiny. Arewa House represents history and leadership; it is the right place to begin rewriting the narrative of Nigeria together.”

Similarly, NYA Vice President (South), Hon. Meshack Onyeche, highlighted the Accord as a turning point in efforts to overcome misconceptions and regional mistrust.

“This Accord is more than a document; it is a covenant of peace, trust, and partnership,” he noted. “For too long, avoidable regional tensions have shaped our country. Today, we stand together to show that the youth are ready to lead with unity and fairness. The NSYAA lays a foundation for interfaith harmony, economic collaboration, and national cohesion. Our goal is a Nigeria where every young person feels included and empowered.”

The NYA has extended invitations to youth organizations, civil society groups, religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim communities, traditional rulers, media representatives, and national stakeholders to attend the ceremony.

With the signing of the NSYAA, the Alliance hopes to usher in a new era of youth-led unity efforts—one in which young Nigerians collectively champion peace, mutual respect, and shared national progress.
