The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its unwavering commitment to ending the unique security challenges bedeviling Niger State and the country at large.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, gave the assurance through the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of Training and Development and Coordinating DIG for the North-Central zone, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, during a two-day official working visit to the Niger State Command in Minna.
To address manpower shortages, DIG Mohammed disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the IGP to commence the recruitment of 50,000 police personnel nationwide.
This will allocate over 1,300 new recruits to each state to bolster the existing workforce.
The DIG noted that his visit was aimed at gathering first-hand field intelligence to launch coordinated, cross-border operations with states bordering Niger to effectively neutralize interstate criminal syndicates.
He further reassured students, parents, and school administrators of their safety, stating that the Special School Protection Unit—led by a Superintendent of Police—will receive maximum support.
“We have also aligned a safety protocol for school owners to follow so as to mitigate and prevent attacks on schools across the country,” DIG Mohammed added.
Welcoming the DIG, the Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Abdullahi Adamu Elleman, applauded the high-ranking officer for the on-the-spot assessment.
CP Elleman explained that Niger State’s vast geography makes it highly vulnerable to cross-border crimes. The state shares porous boundaries with
Kaduna, Kebbi, and Zamfara States
Kwara and Kogi States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
While these boundaries facilitate commerce, the CP lamented that they also serve as escape routes for criminal elements.
“The sheer size of the State, its extensive forest belts, difficult terrain, and scattered rural settlements present unique policing challenges.
Overcoming this requires sustained operational presence, effective mobility, and intelligence-driven security operations,”CP Elleman maintained.
