The Tax Justice and Governance Platform/Prime Initiative, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service (JIRS) and the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) teams, successfully conducted a Community Outreach Campaign across six major markets in Jigawa State.
This was contained in a statement signed by the executive director prime Initiative Muhammad Abdu Dutse.
He said, the campaign targeted traders, community leaders, women, youth, and other stakeholders in markets at Hadejia, Gujungu, Maigatari, Sara, Dutse, and Shuwarin to increase awareness about tax education, promote compliance, and strengthen trust between taxpayers and tax authorities.
According to him, the campaign reached over 600 participants across the six markets, with shop-to-shop engagements ensuring broader inclusivity while 54 grievances were recorded, out of which 34 were resolved on-site within an average time of 30 minutes.
“Participants gained a deeper understanding of tax obligations, the use of taxes for development, and how to access GRM services.Inclusivity: Women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) actively participated, making up 40%, 30%, and 2.5% of the attendees, respectively”, he said.
During the campaign, the Stakeholders highlighted infrastructure needs, including better market facilities, as key to improving tax compliance.
He said, the outreach has significantly enhanced trust and transparency between the government and taxpayers, improving understanding of tax obligations and fostering collaboration to address grievances.
