The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RUWASSA) Directorate has certified Kwali central ward open defecation free.
The Director in charge of Sanitation in Kwali Area Council, Aisha Bakpo who disclosed this while speaking to newsmen during the celebration of the World Toilet Day held at the Palace of Etsu Kwali with the theme “Toilet for Peace”.
She said the plans are underway to go to the remaining 9 wards in Kwali Area Council to enlighten the residents on the need to construct toilets in their home.
She said: “The FCT RUWASSA alongside Kwali Area Council have been piloting for the eradication of open defecation for 2 years now”.
She therefore, disclosed that some of the youths in Kwali were empowered economically to educate the people on the danger of open defecation, and urged the residents to stop open defecation for the sake of their safety.
Also speaking, the Desk officer of RUWASSA in Kwali, Mr. Usman O. Sunday, called on the principals to construct toilets in their schools for the benefit of the students.
On his part, the FCT RUWASSA, Mr. Suzanne George, who is also a representative of UNICEF appealed to the royal fathers and critical stakeholders to deem it necessary to preach against open defecation.
Not left out, the co-ordinator of wash in Kwali, Dada Aminat Adetola and a representive of CAN Chiarman in Kwali, Mr. Sunday Ishaya, advised the people to avoid defecating in public places, and charged them to cultivate the habit of hand washing.
Meanwhile, the occasion which featured the conferment of awards to the deserving personalities was graced by the traditional rulers.
