Sallah: Sunusi stages first durbar as emir of Kano

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, on Saturday, staged his first traditional Sallah durbar, since he ascended the throne four months ago.

It would be recalled that since before the death of the late emir, Ado Bayero, previous Sallah durbars were cancelled in Kano, largely due to security concerns.

However, in this Sallah period, the emir staged successful Hawan Idi, the durbar conducted immediately after the Eid prayer, while Hawan Daushe durbar, staged for a visit to the emir’s mother, followed yesterday, while the Hawan Nasarawa is being conducted today.

During the Hawan Idi durbar, the emir and his entourage, the district heads and their people, rode through the Kofar Wambai and Zage area amidst drum beats and gunshots, and stayed at the Shettima’s house, where his predecessors used to stay and extend pleasantries. He finally moved to his palace and addressed the public before he alighted from the horse.

In his address, the monarch encouraged Muslims on animal sacrifice on the Eid day, maintaining that the rites were originated from the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).

While expressing delight for Federal Government’s effort to kick Ebola out of Nigeria, the monarch also prayed for peace to reign in the country, assuring that the lingering insecurity will be something of past in near future.

The traditional durbar is expected to end on October 8, 2014, when he will stage the Hawan Fanisau durbar, another emir’s palace, about 10 kilometres from the Kano metropolis.
