A prominent Sokoto businessman and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Murtala Madugu, has resigned from the party and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State.

Madugu was formally received into the APC by the party’s leader in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, last week.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Sokoto by Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Wamakko.

Why Madugu Joined APC

Explaining his decision, Madugu said his defection was influenced by what he described as the developmental projects being implemented by the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu across Sokoto State.

He said the projects and other initiatives of the state government had strengthened his belief that the APC provided a platform through which he could contribute to the political and socio-economic development of Sokoto State.

Madugu also cited what he described as a lack of focus and internal coordination within the ADC leadership in the state as another reason for leaving the opposition party.

He pledged to work with the APC leadership and contribute to strengthening the party at the grassroots.

Wamakko Welcomes Defector

Receiving Madugu into the APC, Senator Wamakko welcomed him to the party and assured him of equal treatment and opportunities.

Wamakko said the APC would continue to support programmes and policies aimed at promoting development and improving the welfare of residents across Sokoto State.

He described Madugu’s decision to join the APC as a welcome development and urged party members to remain united and work collectively to strengthen the party.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, also attended the reception and joined Senator Wamakko in welcoming Madugu into the APC.
