A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over an alleged case of cyberstalking and criminal defamation against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Justice Mohammed Umar directed that Sowore be taken into custody pending the continuation of proceedings on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
The case stems from a two-count charge filed by the Department of State Services, accusing the activist of violating provisions of the amended Cybercrimes Act, 2024, after he described Tinubu as a “criminal” in social media posts made in August 2025.
According to the prosecution, Sowore’s posts on X and Facebook were false and intended to incite public disorder.
However, the activist has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The legal battle took a dramatic turn earlier this month when Sowore’s lawyers withdrew from the case, citing what they described as the humiliation they suffered during the proceedings.
Following their withdrawal, the activist opted to defend himself and subsequently filed a motion seeking Justice Umar’s recusal on grounds of alleged bias.
The court, however, dismissed the application on Monday.
Justice Umar had earlier revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his defence on June 16.
Sowore, however, insisted that he had appeared in court on the previous adjourned date, only to discover that the judge was absent. He also claimed to have formally notified the court registry of his intended travel before the arrest warrant was issued.
With Monday’s ruling, the activist will remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre until the case resumes on Wednesday.
