President Bola Tinubu has commended the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) for strengthening Nigeria’s fertiliser value chain and advancing food security under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking on Thursday, the President said interventions through the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), restructured under MOFI, and NADF’s Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP) show his administration is keeping its promise to make food security a major pillar of governance.
Tinubu noted that global supply chain disruptions and rising input costs, worsened by Middle East conflict, threatened agricultural productivity; his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga said in a statement.
Nigeria responded early by securing critical raw materials, signing forward supply agreements, and protecting local blending plants from market shocks, he said.
As of May 2026, over 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs — about 9 million bags — had been secured, with 10 vessels discharged or in transit. The country is on track to deliver a 1.1 million metric tonne programme this year, equivalent to 22 million bags nationwide.
Strategic contracting for inputs saved N61.58 billion in 2026 alone, helping moderate costs for farmers. Tinubu added that Nigeria now has more than 90 operational blending plants, the largest capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa, boosting jobs and agricultural resilience.
While MOFI focused on procurement and blending capacity, NADF targeted last-mile delivery. Under RH-FISP, 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser are being distributed to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the FCT this planting season.
NADF is also supporting digital extension services and guidance for priority crops including rice, maize, cassava, and soybean.
“Securing inputs and keeping blending plants active is only the first step. The real test is last-mile access — getting fertiliser to the farmers who need it, when they need it,” Tinubu said.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to raising productivity, supporting farmers, and reducing food prices.
He said:“This is the meaning of promise made, promise kept. We will continue to take practical steps that improve productivity, support our farmers, and secure our nation’s food future”.
