The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stands a strong chance of winning the 2027 presidential election if former President Goodluck Jonathan emerges as the party’s candidate.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, monitored in Abuja, Agbedi maintained that despite the internal challenges facing the opposition party, the PDP remains a formidable political force ahead of the general election.
According to him, Jonathan has neither declared his intention to contest the presidency nor ruled out the possibility, leaving the door open for his potential participation in the race.
Agbedi also acknowledged that the leadership dispute within the PDP, involving factions associated with former Minister Taminu Turaki and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is yet to be resolved.
However, he expressed confidence that the outcome of the legal and political processes would favour his faction.
The lawmaker’s comments come after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declined to process Jonathan’s presidential nomination submitted by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the PDP.
INEC explained that presidential nominations must be submitted through its designated online portal in accordance with the Electoral Act and established electoral guidelines.
Agbedi nevertheless insisted that if Jonathan eventually appears on the PDP’s presidential ticket, the party would be well-positioned to reclaim power in the 2027 general election.
