Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has urged religious leaders to intensify the preaching of peace, tolerance and unity amid security challenges in the state.
Bago made the call when members of the Niger State Imams Forum and other Islamic organisations paid him a condolence visit over the deaths of 37 artisanal miners.
The governor thanked the delegation for its solidarity and described religious leaders as influential voices whose messages could help strengthen peaceful coexistence and curb social vices.
He also urged them to remain focused on promoting peace and continue praying for Niger State and Nigeria, particularly as parts of the state face security challenges.
Director-General of the Niger State Bureau for Religious Affairs, Malam Umar Faruk Abdullahi, who led the delegation, described the miners’ deaths as devastating and encouraged the governor to remain steadfast.
He said the Islamic organisations visited Government House to sympathise with the governor and people of Niger State and offer prayers following the tragedy.
The Chief Imam of Minna, Malam Jibril Isah, led prayers for the deceased and for peace, security and unity in Niger State and Nigeria.
