The Democracy Watch Initiative has commended the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over its handling of allegations against a former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The ICPC confirmed that charges have been filed against the former governor, with his arraignment scheduled for this week at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the group described the development as a step towards strengthening accountability in public office.

Bamidele said the allegations contained in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026 include claims relating to the handling of public property and financial transactions.

He added that the commission had also initiated a separate case at the Kaduna State High Court, marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, involving allegations such as abuse of office and fraud.

According to the group, the filing of cases in both federal and state courts on March 18, 2026, reflects what it called a comprehensive approach to addressing corruption issues.

Bamidele stressed the need for due process, noting that all parties involved must be given a fair hearing.

“It is crucial that the principles of fairness and justice guide the proceedings, ensuring that the rights of all parties are upheld,” he said.

He also urged stakeholders, including civil society organisations and the media, to remain attentive as the case progresses.

The group further called on the judiciary to handle the matter with diligence, emphasising the importance of public confidence in the legal system.

“The public’s confidence in our legal system hinges on the perception that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” Bamidele stated.

The initiative reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and the rule of law, while expressing hope that the judicial process would be conducted in line with established legal principles.
