Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday took to the streets of Lagos to protest against what they described as the worsening state of insecurity, just hours after holding a late-night meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The protest, which drew a large turnout of workers and union leaders, saw demonstrators march through major areas of the state, calling on the government to take urgent and concrete steps to address the growing wave of crime threatening lives, livelihoods, and businesses in Lagos.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the protesters expressed frustration over what they said was the failure of authorities to stem rising cases of violence and criminal activities. Some of the banners read, “Federal Government, no more excuses and rhetorics. End insecurity now.”
The demonstration comes amid weeks of reported violent incidents across different parts of the country, a situation the NLC has repeatedly condemned. The labour union had earlier vowed to sustain pressure on the government until decisive measures are put in place to restore safety and public confidence.
Despite the talks with President Tinubu on Tuesday night, the NLC proceeded with the protest, signalling that labour leaders are seeking more than assurances and want to see visible action in tackling insecurity.
