The Kebbi Government said that it has spent N500 million on the procurement of drugs for distribution free to pregnant women and infants in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Shehu Sambawa, said this at a sensitisation workshop organised by a non – governmental organisation, ‘Advocacy Nigeria’ in Birnin -Kebbi.
Sambawa, who was represented by Alhaji Hassan Maigandi, said that the gesture was part of measures put in place by the government to reduce infant and maternal mortality in the state.
He said that the drugs would be distributed promptly to the target beneficiaries.
On access to healthcare delivery, the commissioner said that the ministry in collaboration with SURE-P had deployed nurses to rural areas to boost health care delivery at the grassroots.
In her remarks, Hajia Safiya Abdullahi, the North-West Coordinator of the advocacy programme, said the project in partnership with the SURE-P was aimed at working out measures on issues of maternal mortality and child health services.
Abdullahi said the organisation would liaise with the state government, legislature, traditional institutions and other non – governmental organisations in the state, to ensure the success of the programme.
Hajiya Amamata Kwaido, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state, decried the dearth of health personnel particularly in primary health centres in the state.
Kwaido said that most of the newly established clinics and health care centres across the state lacked the necessary facilities and health personnel to operate.
She, however, appealed to husbands to allow their wives to attend ante-natal clinics in order to reduce maternal and infant deaths in the state.
