Kwara NDLEA arrests 164 suspects for drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized a total of 1.2 tons of hard drugs from some 164 suspects during various operations last year across Kwara state.

The suspects include 149 males and 15 females. The seizures were from suspects from within the state and those in transit through the state.

The state Commander of the agency, Mr. Segun Oke who confirmed this at a press briefing expressed concern over armed attacks against officials of the agency with a warning that as an agency empowered to use legal force in the course of duty; it would no longer hesitate to react to future attacks by suspects.

The briefing was part of activities earmarked for the 2014 anti-drug abuse seminar by the agency with the theme: The New Legal High Drugs and Its consequences in Individual, Family and Community, held in collaboration with members of Nigeria Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPMED) in the state.

Oke listed the seizures to include 807kilogrammes of cannabis, 351 kilogrammes of psychotropic and 1.79 kilogrammes of cocaine.

The agency expressed concern over the cocaine seizures saying it was the first of its kind in the state and was discovered at the Post Office where the courier had gone to collect it.

He said some officials of the agency were attacked and severely wounded in the course of the operations last year by suspects, saying the agency had decided not to allow such development to occur again.
