The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).
In a statement released in Awka on Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime, noted that Bishop Kukah’s appointment is expected to leverage his extensive global network to foster international partnerships.
According to the statement, the appointment also aims to inspire ethical leadership within the institution and signals a commitment to producing well-rounded graduates.
It adds :“Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah is an eminent Nigerian intellectual and cleric whose contributions integrate academic scholarship with the pursuit of social justice in Nigeria.”
The statement further detailed the Bishop’s distinguished academic background: St. Augustine Major Seminary, Jos: Philosophy and Theology,
University of Ibadan: Diploma in Religious Studies,
Pontifical Urban University, Rome: Bachelor of Divinity,
University of Bradford: Master’s degree in Peace Studies, and School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London: PhD (1990).
It added that Bishop Kukah has also held fellowships and studied at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It noted that beyond his clerical and academic achievements, Bishop Kukah is a prolific author and the founder of The Kukah Centre, an organization pioneering research-driven advocacy for interfaith harmony and policy reform.
